Book of Skulls: Slayers of Eragoth – metal-inspired boardgame!

2023-11-04

So, I got an email from a reader who, apart from being a metalhead, is also a board game developer. And his name's even Andy. So being somewhat of an experienced board game geek myself, I just gotta make some noise for his upcoming project: A metal-inspired fantasy board game!

What makes this project not only relevant for all of us, but also unique, is that the game is accompanied by an original soundtrack of metal tunes – written and recorded by the game developer himself. I mean, holy shit, people.

Here's what Andy says about the auditive side:

"Metal music was a key inspiration for Book of Skulls. The story blends an epic original narrative filled with easter eggs and tie-ins with the genre. Everything from heavy metal to black metal to down-tuned 8-string guitars has influenced its creation, from character move names to the soundtrack itself".

Book of Skulls: Slayers of Eragoth is out on Kickstarter now, and I gotta say I'm pretty blown away with what Andy's been able to produce even before the Kickstarter campaign. I mean, check out this prototype material:

Fucking epic, dude.
Fucking epic, dude.

The setup is that the lands of Eragoth are plagued by demons, and as a demon slayer, it's the players' job to restore peace. The players are in teams that take turns playing as both demon slayers and then demons, combating the opposing team's slayers. Alternatively, the players can play as one team of slayers against a traditional dungeon master who controls the demons.

There are 16 slayers out of 150  characters in total, and with 300 different moves and abilities, this makes for thousands of different combinations in combat. And if that's not enough replayability right there, each game takes place on any combination of 10 different modular game boards, making for hundreds of different combinations in total. Add to that various random events and side quests throughout, and you've got replayability out the ol' wazoo.

Here's a short overview of the game from the man himself:

I say we need to make Book of Skulls happen, you guys. For metal, for Andy, for geek culture everywhere. So get your ass on that Kickstarter campaign and back it up.

And, last but not least, here's a more power metal-oriented bit of the soundtrack on Spotify.
